Toothaches can be a real pain but we’re here to help!

There could be several causes for your toothache and the pain can vary from mild to severe. Some of the reasons for your toothache may be remedied at home but most require the help of a dentist. Some common problems include:

Missing or Dislodged Tooth

A missing or dislodged tooth can be a scary time but in some cases it’s fixable and we’re here to help you manage the pain. The best thing to do if your tooth has been knocked out or dislodged is to place it back in the socket until you can visit your dentist. Make sure to rinse your mouth, washing away blood and other harmful particles. If you cannot fit the tooth back into the socket, store it in warm milk, saline, or your own saliva. When handling the tooth, take it by the crown and not the root. Visit your dentist or an emergency room as soon as possible.

Fractured or Broken Tooth

After rinsing your broken tooth with warm water, apply ice to your cheek on the affected side to reduce swelling and sensitivity. Over the counter pain medication may be used to control the pain or discomfort. Visit your dentist as soon as possible. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the break but your dentist will work with you to develop a custom treatment plan to get your smile back in no time!

Managing Tooth Pain at Home

Minor discomfort and tooth pain can sometimes be remedied at home and may be the result of foreign particles that have been stuck between teeth or gums. It is best to rinse your mouth thoroughly and avoid placing pain medication right on the affected area. If the pain persists, don’t hesitate to contact us and we will fit you in as soon as we can!

Toothaches can be debilitating, affecting one’s ability to eat, speak, and go about one’s daily activities. If you are suffering from a toothache in Surrey, it’s important to seek prompt care to address the underlying issue and alleviate your pain. Our practice is dedicated to providing effective toothache relief and restoring one’s oral health.

Common Causes of Toothaches

Toothaches can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Tooth Decay: Cavities are one of the most common causes of toothaches. When decay reaches the tooth’s inner layers, it can cause significant pain.
  • Gum Disease: Infections in the gums can lead to tooth pain and sensitivity.
  • Tooth Abscess: An abscessed tooth, or a pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection, can cause severe toothache.
  • Tooth Fracture: A cracked or fractured tooth can result in pain, especially when chewing or exposed to hot and cold temperatures.
  • Teeth Grinding: Chronic teeth grinding (bruxism) can wear down the enamel and cause tooth pain.

Symptoms of Toothaches

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you may have a toothache that requires attention:

  • Sharp or Throbbing Pain: Constant or intermittent pain in the affected tooth.
  • Sensitivity: Discomfort when exposed to hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks.
  • Swelling: Swelling around the tooth or in the jaw.
  • Headache or Fever: Associated symptoms that can occur with severe infections.
  • Bad Taste or Odor: Unpleasant taste or smell from an infected tooth.

Treatment Options for Toothaches

Our practice in Surrey offers a range of treatments to address toothaches and their underlying causes:

  • Fillings: For cavities causing tooth pain, we remove the decay and fill the cavity to restore the tooth’s structure.
  • Root Canal Therapy: If the toothache is due to an infected or damaged pulp, a root canal can save the tooth and alleviate pain.
  • Tooth Extraction: In cases where the tooth cannot be saved, extraction may be necessary to relieve pain and prevent further complications.
  • Gum Treatment: For toothaches caused by gum disease, we provide treatments to reduce infection and inflammation.
  • Night Guards: To address pain from teeth grinding, custom-fitted night guards can protect your teeth and alleviate symptoms.
